Review

One of the most popular Spanish songwriters of the last century, José Luis Perales has long retreated from the spotlight, happy to spend his days composing at his country home, in the company of his family. While he has continued touring, his releases have become more and more sporadic. Calle Soledad arrives six years after 2006's Navegando por Ti and introduces 11 new songs, produced by Javier Limón and arranged by Cuban pianist Iván Lewis. Some may be strings-and-piano ballads, others may be more uptempo pop numbers, but all are mature, eminently tasteful examples of the main line of Spanish mainstream romantic music, by one of its most illustrious representatives -- not to mention one of the few who has been able to age gracefully. A DVD with a "making of the album" feature, an interview, and live performances is also included. ~ Mariano Prunes
