Greatest Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 1-2

Other albums by

This two-disc set, released by the record label of the Columbia House record club, does not contain the greatest hits of the 1960s, of course. What it does contain are 40 tracks from the Sony vaults that were released as singles during the '60s, 39 of which reached the Billboard Hot 100. (The exception is the Electric Flag's 1967 debut, "Groovin' Is Easy.") Thirty-two of them made the Top 40, 21 the Top Ten, and six ("Hang on Sloopy," "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Kind of a Drag," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Sunshine Superman," and "Take Good Care of My Baby") hit number one. So, for the '60s music fan, the compilation is a mixture of extremely familiar and long-forgotten (or never heard) recordings in which, for example, Adam Wade's revival of the 1953 hit "Crying in the Chapel," which may have inspired RCA Victor belatedly to release Elvis Presley's version, but which only spent a few weeks at the bottom of the charts in early 1965, is followed by the Byrds' chart-topping cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." And the random sequencing of recordings from a decade in which musical styles changed rapidly leads to other odd juxtapositions, such as when the Isley Brothers' funky Top Five 1969 hit "It's Your Thing" gives way to the Brill Building pop of Tony Orlando's Top 20 1961 hit "Bless You." There is plenty of good music here by major artists, and the listener may find some of the obscurities illuminating (Billy Joe Royal's original version of "Hush," which predated the remake by Deep Purple by only a year) or at least amusing (the novelty "Babysittin' Boogie"). But the set has little value as a piece of musical history, except in the most miscellaneous sense. ~ William Ruhlmann
