KAN

Kan Kimura, more popularly known by his stage name KAN, was a Japanese singer and songwriter. He was born on September 24, 1962, in Fukuoka, Japan. His musical journey started in 1983 with the band Annette and soon transitioned to a solo career in 1984. KAN's early career included composing background music for a 1986 film by Nobuhiko Obayashi, leading to his major recording debut in 1987 with the album Terebi no Naka ni. KAN's breakthrough came with the 1990 release of his single "Ai wa Katsu," which not only topped the Oricon charts but also sold over 2 million copies and earned him the 33rd Japan Record Award. The success of "Ai wa Katsu" and the album Yakyū Senshu ga Yume datta (野球選手が夢だった) paved the way for further releases in the 1990s, including five Top 10 singles and four Top 10 albums. By 2010, KAN had released a total of 33 singles and 15 studio albums, selling over 4.6 million copies in Japan alone. His studio albums ranged from Girl to Love (1988) to Kanchigai mo Hanahadashii Watashi no Jinsei (2010), showcasing his versatility as an artist. KAN's blossoming career was cut short when he passed away from Meckel's diverticulum cancer on November 12, 2023, at the age of 61.
