Madvillain

Madvillain were an American alternative hip-hop duo, consisting of MC Daniel “MF Doom” Dumile and Otis “Madlib” Jackson Jr. A longtime fan of MF Doom’s Operation: Doomsday (1999), Jackson got in contact with Dumile to make a collaborative album. Dumile agreed on the spot and travelled to Los Angeles to start working on their debut album in 2002. After Jackson announced the project at the Red Bull Music Academy in Brazil, the pair made their debut in 2004 with the critically-acclaimed album Madvillainy, which featured extensive use of obscure samples and abstract, free-associative lyrics. The LP quickly gained underground cult status and was included in several Best of the Year lists, garnering much anticipation for a future collaboration between the two. In 2005, two albums of remixes by Four Tet and Koushik were released and Jackson dropped a re-working of their debut LP in 2008 under the name Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix. A single entitled “Papermill” arrived in 2010 via Adult Swim’s website, and a second album was scheduled to be finished and released in 2012 but never got to see the light of day due to creative differences between the Supervillain and the Beat Konducta. The project officially ended with Dumile’s death on October 31, 2020.
