Mélanie de Biasio

Born in Charleroi, Belgium on July 12, 1978, to a Belgian mother and Italian father, Melanie De Biasio is an acclaimed jazz vocalist, flautist, and composer. Originally interested in ballet as a child, she became interested in playing the Western concert flute at the age of eight. By her teen years, she embraced alternative and classic rock and was briefly a member of a rock band at the age of 15. Attending the Brussels Royal Conservatory of Jazz, she studied singing and was honored with First Prize of the highest distinction in 2001. Suffering a pulmonary infection during a Russian tour in 2004, Melanie De Biasio was unable to sing for a year. Because of this, she developed her unique whispering chant style of singing. After graduating, she performed alongside saxophonist Steve Houben at several festivals in her homeland before becoming a solo artist and releasing her debut album, A Stomach is Burning, in 2007. The album was a critical success and earned her a Best Jazz Album award from Les Octaves de la Musique. Signing with the Play It Again Sam (PIAS) label, she issued her second album, No Deal (2013), which rose to number 5 on the Belgian Albums chart and hit number 55 on the French charts. The following year, she released the No Deal Remixed album, which was followed by the Blackened Cities EP (2016), which featured one 25-minute recording. The EP was honored with several awards including two D6BELS (Musician of the Year and Author & Compositor of the Years) and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards for Track of the Year. In 2017, she issued her third album, Lilies, which reached the Top 10 in Belgium and number 35 in France. The album earned her three D6BELS Awards: Best Album, Best Music Video, and Author & Compositor of the Year. Six years after the release of Lilies, Melanie De Biasio released her fourth studio album, Il Viaggio (2023), which hit number 1 on the Belgian Albums chart.
