The Detroit Cobras

Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1994, The Detroit Cobras was a garage rock band founded by Rachel Nagy (vocals/piano) and Mary Ramirez (guitar). Nagy and Ramirez were the only constant members, running through nearly a dozen guitarists, bassists, and drummers over the course of their 28-year career. Although the group released several albums and singles on a variety of labels, their repertoire consisted of primarily cover versions of 1960s garage rock classics. Their debut album – Mink, Rat, or Rabbit – was released in 1998. The group’s notoriety as a live band drew larger audiences and they became one of the most talked about garage rock bands in the U.S. With the release of their second album – Life, Love, and Leaving (2001) - their fame spread overseas, inspiring the iconic label Rough Trade Records to sign the group. They followed that album with the 2003 EP Seven Easy Pieces and then the album Baby (2004), which featured their first self-penned track mixed in with their array of cover versions. The Detroit Cobras released their final studio album, Tried and True, in 2007. Although their forays into the studio became rare, they continued to perform live. Vocalist Rachel Nagy died on January 15, 2022.
