Valerie June

The alternative country singer Valerie June has described her eclectic blend of folk, blues, rock, soul and country music as "organic moonshine roots music". The artist began her career in Memphis playing alongside her husband Michael Joyner in a duo called Bella Sun. After the break-up of her marriage she began a solo career and concentrated on expanding her musical skillset by learning guitar, banjo and steel guitar, all of which now feature in her recordings. June followed a number of US alternative country artists who have launched their European career by appearing on the popular UK music show 'Later... With Jools Holland'. The show has provided a springboard for many up and coming artists and in conjunction with support in the form of airplay on BBC's Radio 6, a channel which has a substantial European listener base, June developed into a popular act with European fans of Americana and alternative country music. After releasing a handful of self-promoted albums her first release as a signed artist was the 2013 album 'Pushin' Against a Stone' released through Sunday Best Recordings. The album received wide critical acclaim and was nominated for a Blues Music Award.
