Wolfgang Ambros

Wolfgang Ambros is an Austrian singer, songwriter and musician who had his first hit at the age of 19 in 1971 with his song 'Da Hofa' based on the poetry of Joesi Prokopetz. It went to the number one spot on the Austrian Ö3 Radio Hit Parade. In 1974, along with Joesi Prokopetz and Manfred Tauchen of the band DÖF, Ambros made the concept LP 'Der Watzmann Ruft', which became a stage musical and was still being performed as recently as 2011. 1976 saw the formation of his band Die No. 1 vom Wienerwald (The No. 1 from the Vienna Woods) with Peter Schleicher, Helmut Pichler, Helmut Nowak and Martin Kunz. The band, in various forms, kept recording music and playing live until 2013. The 1980s saw more success for Ambros, both as a solo artist and with his band and other collaborations. The 1990s saw the release of 'The Greatest Hits from 20 Years' LP as well as the formation of the band Austria 3 with Rainhard Fendrich and Georg Danzer. The later decades saw Ambros releasing more albums but fewer singles, as well as the re-emergence as a stage show of 'Der Watzmann Ruft'. Since 2017, Ambros was forced to cut back on recording and performing following severe illness and a spinal injury.
