AC/DC: DNA

AC/DC is coming up on 40 years as a band, and there are rumors swirling that they may be prepared to hang it up due to health issues. Frontman Brian Johnson has stated that the band it not over--yet--but your Slacker curators were inspired to create a timely look at AC/DC's musical DNA: their hits, deep tracks, influences, friends, family, and collaborators.

Adam Levine: DNA

From his beginnings in LA alt-rock band Kara’s Flowers when he was only in high school, to his blue-eyed soul breakthrough with Maroon 5, Adam Levine is more than just Blake Shelton’s comedic foil on The Voice, or People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” He’s a songwriter, mentor, actor, producer, and this week he celebrates his 35th birthday. To celebrate, your Slacker curators have put together a station that includes his biggest hits, collaborations, early work, influences, and friends. This is “Adam Levine: DNA.”

Arcade Fire: DNA

34 years ago this week, Win Butler of Arcade Fire was born in the sleepy Sierra Nevada mountain town of Truckee, California. His travels took him to Texas, New Hampshire, New York and finally Montreal, where he met his future wife Regine Chassagne and formed the genesis of what would become Arcade Fire. They’ve gone on to become one of the most critically beloved modern acts, from Manhattan to Coachella, and from the NPR crowd to the Hot Topic constituency. They’ve done this, won a Grammy, and sold millions of records without compromising their art. And that’s why they are such an interesting subject for the latest installment of Slacker’s DNA series. On this station, we explore Arcade Fire’s musical DNA—their own music along with their influences, friends, family, collaborators, and followers. This is Arcade Fire: DNA.

Beatles: DNA

Welcome to another installment of Slacker’s DNA series. On this station, we explore the musical DNA of the greatest and most influential rock band of all time—The Beatles. Your Slacker curators have created a retrospective that covers every era of the Fab Four’s career- from their humble beginnings covering American R&B songs through Beatlemania, the evolution of Revolver, the psychedelic influence of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the perfect swan song that was Abbey Road. You’ll also hear the music that Paul, John, George, and Ringo created after the Beatles—as solo artists and as part of groups like Wings, Traveling Wilburys, and the Plastic Ono Band. Mix that with a selection of key songs from the many artists that the Beatles directly influenced, and you’ve got the Beatles: DNA.

Beyoncé: DNA

Beyoncé is the undisputed reigning queen of pop and R&B. She’s won 17 Grammys, she’s sold over 118 million albums as a solo artist in addition to the 60 million albums she sold with Destiny’s Child. Beyond those material achievement, she is a mother, one half of the most powerful couple in music, and a post-feminist role model for millions. Just this year, Time Magazine placed her at the top of their annual list of the most influential people in the world, calling her a “Titan.” On this installment of our DNA series, we will explore Beyonce’s musical family tree—the music that inspired her, her collaborations, friends, family, biggest hits, and growing legacy. This is a comprehensive look at Beyoncé’s musicial identity across the spectrum—it’s Beyoncé: DNA.

Blake Shelton: DNA

From topping the charts with his own songs and collaborations to mentoring the next crop of superstars on “The Voice,” Blake Shelton is undeniably a major force in country music. These are songs from his inspirations, partners in crime and protégées, along with his biggest hits and deep cuts. This is Blake Shelton: DNA.

Bob Marley: DNA

Robert Nesta Marley was a cultural ambassador on behalf of Jamaica, Reggae music, and the Rastafari movement. He was also a peace activist, and one of the most impactful artists in the history of music. His legacy lives on via his influence, his 13 children, and his message of activism and social justice. He is the subject of this edition of Slacker’s DNA series, and here we will explore his musical family tree—his early Jamaican dub and ska influences, his devotion to Rastafari, his international hits, his friends, family, collaborations, and his legacy.

Carrie Underwood: DNA

Welcome to another edition of Slacker’s “DNA” series—where we present you with a curated retrospective of an artist’s key tracks, collaborations, influences, and connections—their musical DNA. Since winning "American Idol" in 2005, Carrie Underwood has won 6 Grammys and sold over 15 million albums. Last year, she chalked up and incredible 18th #1 single, with "See You Again." This week, Carrie will celebrate her 31st birthday and we've assembled a station that features not only her biggest hits, but her entire musical family tree. This is Carrie Underwood: DNA.

Drake: DNA

On paper, Drake sounds like a very unlikely hip-hop star. Born Aubrey Drake Graham to a Jewish family in suburban Toronto in 1986, Drake was as a successful actor on the TV series, ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation.’ After releasing mixtapes that caught the attention of Lil Wayne, Drake’s career only blew up from there. These are Drake’s biggest hits and deep cuts, along with songs from his influences, collaborators -- and even a very famous girlfriend. This is Drake: DNA.

Eminem: DNA

Eminem is a very intimidating artist to address for Slacker’s DNA series. Not because of his persona and aggressive nature, but because he’s so prolific, so diverse, and his legacy is not even close to fully written. He is one of the greatest artists of all time, and he will be viewed as such for generations to come. On this station, we explore Marshall Mathers’ musical family tree. His Detroit roots, close relationships with D12 and Royce tha 5’9, collaborators, production work and significant legacy. This is Eminem: DNA

Garth Brooks: DNA

25 years ago, Garth Brooks released his first album, and your Slacker curators we are taking this opportunity to feature him in our latest edition of Slacker: DNA. When you talk about Garth Brooks’ musical DNA, you’re really talking about his family. Garth says “Growing up the last of six kids, music was the life blood of our family and as you can imagine, mom, dad, and each kid had his or her own favorite stuff and it all funneled down to me." During his wildly popular Las Vegas show, he was very clear about his musical family tree: He learned about classic country like Merle Haggard and George Jones from his father, he learned to love classic soul and R&B like Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding from his mother, and his older siblings turned him on to 70s rock. That makes our job easy. Here we have created a station that explores Garth Brooks’ musical family tree—his influences, his hits, his friends, family, and collaborations, and his legacy. You can blame it all on his roots--This is Garth Brooks: DNA, on Slacker Radio.

Greatest Classic Rock Albums

It's a question that has been debated for decades amongst scholars and mad men—what are the greatest albums in the history of Classic Rock? Our answer can be found in this countdown—handcrafted by our rock experts and hosted by Redbeard (of "In the Studio"), who added interview gems from the rock legends who altered the course of history. These are The 33 Greatest Classic Rock Albums.

101 Greatest Classic Rock Songs

This is it. The ultimate list of the 101 most important Classic Rock songs. Period. Our rock curators have chosen the game-changing tunes that altered the course of rock'n roll in the 70's and defined where the genre would go in the decades that followed. As a result, this is not your average countdown. What's more, Slacker has called upon Redbeard, the internationally recognized rock expert and host of the celebrated "In The Studio" series and website (www.inthestudio.net), to provide his unique insights and exclusive interview highlights from the likes of Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Pete Townshend, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and many more.

66 Greatest Metal Songs

First, your Slacker curators conspired and argued until they came up with a list of the 66 Greatest Metal Songs of all time.
