You can change the size of the Software Player to "minimode."  This is a small player that shows the album art and still gives you the volume, skip, song information and favorite/ban features.

To access the minimode, click the button, which is in the top right corner of the Software Player.

In addition, there is a setting that enables you to determine if the software player is "always on top" when in minimode.
