Review

Well within a year of releasing Dream, Angie Stone returned with this all-covers project, released on Goldenlane, a label known for re-recordings, secondary live releases, and remix compilations. The liners credit only Jürgen Engler, known primarily for his activity in pioneering industrial metal group Die Krupps (less so for Sly Stone's surreal I'm Back! Family & Friends), and fellow producer and mixer Peter Amato, who has worked with LeAnn Rimes and Ricky Martin, among others. Stone does re-record three of her biggest hits copycat style. Heard from a certain distance, or at a low enough volume, these updates of "Wish I Didn't Miss You," "Baby," and "Brotha" could be confused with the originals. On the nine covers that precede them, including versions of deep classics and hits by Stevie Wonder, Hot Chocolate, and UB40 (via Neil Diamond), Stone sounds spirited and casual, like she's enjoying herself. ~ Andy Kellman
