Brooks & Dunn 3/23/1999

Review

For most fans, it's inconceivable to have a Brooks & Dunn hits collection without "Boot Scootin' Boogie" or "Hard Workin' Man," neither of which are on the budget-line compilation Super Hits. And that, naturally, is a problem for the casual fan, the kind who would buy a budget-line disc expecting that their favorites would be present. That's not the case with Super Hits, which shares only three songs with the exhaustive 19-track Greatest Hits, released just a year and a half before this nine-cut sampler. Those songs -- "Neon Moon," "Rock My World (Little Country Girl)," "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone" -- are good, as are the remaining six songs (all album tracks), but this collection simply doesn't deliver the hits it promises. Taken on its own terms, as a random sampling of nine songs from Brooks & Dunn's catalog, it's entertaining and possibly even a bargain for listeners on a tight budget, but most fans are much better-served by the definitive Greatest Hits. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
