Chuck Berry 11/7/2003

Review

Columbia River's Live! captures an unnamed, undocumented Chuck Berry concert, one that sounds like it's from the '70s. Berry gives a fairly credible performance, yet he never really sounds into it. Some hardcore fans, however, may find that forgivable, in light of the fact that he stretches his blues muscles here, tackling "Every Day I Have the Blues," "Got My Mojo Workin'," and "Key to the Highway." That alone may make it more interesting than the average budget-line comp, but the performance really isn't good enough to justify a recommendation to anyone except very devoted fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
