Review

For Tropical Jazz, Gene Mitchell has teamed up with two extraordinary musicians. Longtime Kenny G guitarist John Raymond adds his flamboyant axe to the proceedings, while Amy Lee, saxophonist for Jimmy Buffett's band, lends the album a tremendous amount of color and expression with her formidable playing. Tropical Jazz is chock-full of melodic highlights. The bluesy "By the Beach" is driven by some sizzling lead guitar riffs, a contagious melody line, well-conceived lyrics, and Lee's wonderful sax work. The rhythm section gives "Tropical Express" a solid foundation, but it's all the nuances that make the song the creative package that it ends up being. "Cold Seattle Night" is blues in it's greatest expressive state. Whether one is focused on the expressive lyrics and vocals, or the sizzling lead guitar riffs and steamy sax licks the mood echoes great blues. The melody and the talented musicians are key attraction factors to "Sweetest Smile." The thing that shines brightest though, has to be the lyrical genius that is expressed. This song displays his genuine ability to put into words an inner emotion and paint a mental picture of these emotions for the listener. "Going Back To Georgia" adds a bit of variety to the album with it's country-rock feel. The hot lead electric guitar riffs and the harmony vocals add a great deal of depth to this catchy melody. "Tribal Revival..." brings back memories of Gene Mitchell's album, Caribbean Cowboy with it's powerful Calypso style. Catchy lyrics blended with a instrumental fortitude that is unrivaled, make this a very attractive piece. Get the crowd together to groove to "...Conga Line," an upbeat instrumental. Call it a tribal revival if that suits the mood, but it's going to move like a Conga line anyway it's labeled. Some excellent sax work is featured here with some of the best percussion coloring the entire package. Another entertaining and enlightening album continuing the tradition of great music from Gene Mitchell, can be heard on Tropical Jazz. ~ Larry Belanger
