The son of renowned opera singer Allan Jones, Jack Jones seems to have inherited a musical expertise that raises him above other vocalists. In the vast desert of mealy-mouthed crooners and gimmicky yodelers, Jones is an oasis, as this 1995 live concert recording will attest.
His performance of a Gershwin medley is artful and moving, as Jones interprets the lyrics with great pathos and dynamics. His sense of rhythm with "Just One of Those Things" is on par with the best interpreters of Cole Porter's music. When he turns his attentions to more recent songs, he gives his selections the same level of emotional and technical attention, and makes classics out of them. "I Had a Dream" is solidly put over with Jones' tact and clarity of both tone and sentiment.
