Review

{$Brown}'s third album, issued in late 1963, was actually for the most part a roundup of tracks that had already appeared on 1963 singles and EPs. Just three of the twelve tracks ({&"Moonglow,"} {&"Walkin' Tall,"} and {&"St. Louis Blues"}) made their first appearance on the LP. {$Brown}'s commercial fortunes in the U.K. were starting to fade as Beatlemania and the British Invasion overran the market, and the record's a spotty mix of largely unmemorable early-'60s-style pop/rock, sometimes with a slight country/rockabilly feel, and sometimes with a bit of a music hall perkiness (and sometimes mixing all of the above at once). There are also instrumentals showcasing his guitar skills, but the best track is the 1963 single {&"Sally Ann,"} one of his catchiest and earthiest discs, though it was only a mild British hit. The original LP is now rare, but all of the material has been reissued on CD; all 12 of the songs, in fact, are available on {^Crazy Mixed-Up Kid: The Complete Pye/Piccadilly Recordings}. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
