John Lee Hooker 11/29/2002

Review

The tracks included on this John Lee Hooker compilation are drawn largely from sessions Hooker did for Bernie Besman's local Detroit label Sensation Records between 1950 and 1954. These are raw, crudely recorded sides that nevertheless have the kind of engaging and rustic power that Hooker returned to constantly throughout his long career (he often returned to the same songs, as well). The Besman recordings have appeared on numerous John Lee Hooker issues over the years, and there is nothing particularly singular about this one, but it gets the job done. ~ Steve Leggett
