Miguel Bosé 28//2005

Review

Miguel Bosé grew up in a family whose close friends included Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway; his godfather was Italian director Luchino Visconti. He appeared as a transvestite in the Pedro Almodovar film High Heels, and his videos have been banned throughout Latin America. This should give newcomers to Miguel Bosé's avant-garde brand of Latin pop music an idea of what to expect. Do not look for flamenco riffs or upbeat tropical rhythms here. An international pop star with over 21 albums and 35 films to his credit, Bosé does not approach music in any of the expected ways. Performed in Spanish with some English phrases thrown in, the CD brims with electronica elements, experimental vocals, and divergent melodies. Velvetina would intrigue the familiar Bosé fan, but this is not an accessible disc for the novice. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates
