Odyssey 31/2/1998

Review

Remix producers Charles Afton and Mike Mucci took great liberties with previously recorded tracks by Odyssey. The doctoring embellished for the better one rendition of the trio's biggest hit "Native New Yorker," but it didn't work as well on a second experiment of the song that's totally off the hook. There are two remixes of "Joy," one full of beats, bottom and echo, and a longer version that practically camouflages the melody. "Use It Up, Wear It Out" is an up-tempo dagger, and Lamont Dozier's "Back to My Roots" gets a makeover that makes the underappreciated jam even more devastating. Lilian Lopez has a voice similar to a male tenor, at times you think it's a guy singing when it's Lopez. ~ Andrew Hamilton
