Rang de Basanti

A.R. Rahman departs from his trademark heavy bass'n'drum-laden sound with Rang de Basanti and delivers a soundtrack that marks his biggest hit of the decade. There is a radical and significant shift from his earlier compositions, which either had a percussion-based dance orientation or sparse melancholic melodies; none of that is found in Rang de Basanti. Rather, Rahman handles the various stipulations of the film acutely, be it the youth awakening or patriotic undertones in a fashion that underrates his earlier works on similar themes. Moreover, Rahman displays his superior capabilities of employing legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Daler Mehndi, and newcomers Naresh Iyer, and Mohamed Aslam and extract the best out of them in equal measure. Even working with unconventional artists like the rapper Blaze on "Paathshala (Be a Rebel)" and Mohit Chauhan (of Silk Route fame) on "Khoon Chala" highlights Rahman's penchant for composing "well-rounded" music that's creative and unique. The album opens with the short devotional "Ik Onkar" by Harshdeep Kaur. The title track comes next, a Punjabi adrenaline pumping song with a nationwide appeal sung be Daler Mehndi. "Roobaroo" is an album highlight with its rock-based sound and lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. Rahman duets for the first time with Lata Mangeshkar on "Luka Chuppi," a melodious track that starts with slow tempos on guitar and builds to heightened climax with alaaps, tabla, and rich orchestration. Rahman sings with his accented, low octave, high-pitched voice in Khalbali having a vibrant ambient techno sound. Rang de Basanti highlights the fact that Rahman continues to be the most preferred composer in Bollywood, and even after two decades of a marvelous career, the glow in his music far surpasses that of his contemporaries. ~ Bhasker Gupta
