This double LP from Savoy (put out by Arista in 1981) has eight titles apiece from sessions led by tenor-saxophonist Georgie Auld, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, drummer Shelly Manne and vibraphonist Cal Tjader. Despite the fact that all of the music was recorded on the West Coast (except for Manne's first session), most of the performances do not fit into the category of cool jazz. Auld leads an obscure but talented ten-piece bop group while Gillespie performs seven standards and "Interlude in 'C'" while backed by strings arranged by Johnny Richards; the latter recordings are okay but not all that essential. Manne's 1951-52 septets precede his better-known groups from later in the decade and feature trumpeter Conte Candoli, altoist Art Pepper and Bob Cooper or Jimmy Giuffre on tenor while Tjader is heard on a pair of straightahead quartet dates that were recorded before he became famous in Latin-jazz. In general the music is enjoyable if not definitive of the era; collectors should look for this interesting and now rare two-fer. ~ Scott Yanow
