Review

G Party serves as a quick and nasty introduction to the sound of West Coast G-funk and gangsta rap. Because the compilation is done by Priority and features mainly Priority releases, there are no Death Row cuts here and no cuts by G-funk masters like Warren G, Bone Thugs, and 2Pac. What you are left with is a collection with a few great songs by innovators like N.W.A. ("Express Yourself"), Ice Cube ("Bop Gun" and "Friday"), and a bunch of songs by second-tier G-funkers like Mista Grimm, Low Profile, and Lil Zane. You do get two tracks from Snoop Dogg, but they are inferior cuts ("Stilla G Thang," "Snoop Dogg [What's My Name, Pt. 2]") from his tenure at No Limit. Dr. Dre is represented by just one song, 1992's "Deep Cover," which introduced Snoop to the world. So this is not nearly a definitive collection of G-funk, but it mostly lives up to its title. ~ Tim Sendra
