Review

1990's Golden Years 1959 is a disappointing oldies collection with a promising track listing that, unfortunately, features only two original recordings among its ten tracks. The originals -- Frankie Avalon's "Venus" and Toni Fisher's "The Big Hurt" -- still sound great, especially compared to the weak re-recordings that surround it. Tired, overworked versions of Lloyd Price's "Personality," the Elegants' "Little Star," and the Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You" lack the impact and nostalgia of the original renditions of these songs. This collection really can't be recommended to anyone, especially since far better '50s pop compilations have come out since its release. ~ Heather Phares
