Review

Any compilation of hits form the 1970s that ranges in its choices from John Lennon/Yoko Ono, David Bowie, and Blue Swede to Nick Gilder, ABBA, the Cars, Hot Chocolate, A Taste of Honey, and Blondie can't be all bad, right? It's not, though some of these choices are ultimately here for kitsch value, the inclusion of Styx's revolting "Babe," being a key example. Still other picks, such as the Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night" and Sugarloaf's "Green-Eyed Lady" are genius because they remind you why they were hits in the first place. We could have lived without Linda Rondstadt's "When Will I Be Loved" and Carly Simon's "You're so Vain" due to their ubiquitous inclusion on so many other '70s comps, but whatever, this is mere quibbling. ~ Thom Jurek
