Review

Shanachie 2007-2012 Sampler would have been a bland, if accurate, title, so the label came up with Sweet & Sexy Soul: The Ultimate Romantic Soul Experience and went with that. Though the label began in 1976 and remains known for its catalog of Irish, African, Latin, and Jamaican music, Shanachie has developed into a haven for veteran R&B artists. This disc, while evidently shooting for some lofty stature, provides an overview of its recent releases. L.A. Players and Lalah Hathaway's "Pick Up" and the Davy D remix of Leela James' Womack & Womack cover aside, everything here was previously released. Highlights include Kindred the Family Soul's "Sticking with You," Hil St. Soul's "Baby Come Over" (featuring Dwele), and Mint Condition's "Caught My Eye." Rooted in traditional and mature soul, this material can provide relief for those who have not enjoyed the more pop-oriented end of 2000s/2010s contemporary R&B. ~ Andy Kellman
