Review

The Best of Soul Train Live, issued after a round of DVD sets, selects some of the live performances from Soul Train, an indispensable part of not just television history but African-American culture. While the idea of being able to listen to the performances without needing some kind of screen is a good one, Soul Train was so much about the visuals -- the set, the bands, and the kids in front of them -- that audio-only, recorded in mono, is a rather hollow experience. There is nothing special about the packaging -- just basic information, including original air dates, and one side of the four-sided booklet is an ad for some of Time-Life's other releases. ~ Andy Kellman
