Review

VH1's original 1998 Divas Live concert was so successful, it guaranteed that there would be a sequel, hence, VH1 Divas Live 99. This time around, the lineup was different, as Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, and Shania Twain sat it out, and Tina Turner, Cher, LeAnn Rimes, Brandy, Faith Hill, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, and Elton John came aboard. The basic format remained the same, as everybody performed their best-known songs, sometimes in the form of a duet. It's thoroughly predictable and lacks any real spark, but it's still mildly entertaining if you're in the mood for a slick crowd-pleaser. And since it's a charity album for the Save the Music Foundation, it's hard to really say anything bad against it, even if musically, it's just pleasantly non-distinguished. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
