Akira Yamaoka

Akira Yamaoka, born on February 6, 1968, in Niigata, Japan, is a Japanese composer and music producer. Initially pursuing a career in design, after attending Tokyo Art College, Yamaoka shifted his focus when he joined entertainment and video game developer Konami in 1993, contributing to various games such as Contra: Hard Corps, Sparkster, as well as providing music for Snatcher. When Konami sought a composer for Silent Hill, Yamaoka volunteered, believing in his capability to create a truly immersive horror game experience with his unique blend of eerie melodies and unsettling sounds, influenced by artists like Trent Reznor, Massive Attack, Metallica, and Depeche Mode. In 2010, Yamaoka joined Grasshopper Manufacture, collaborating with Goichi Suda and Shinji Mikami on Shadows of the Damned (2011). Over the years, he has contributed as an arranger, music director, and composer to numerous game scores, including Black Knight Sword (2012), Killer is Dead (2013), Let It Die (2016), and World of Tanks (2017). His work on The Medium(2021) and the original series soundtrack for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022) earned global recognition, with the latter reaching number 70 on the Top 200 Album chart in France. In 2024, Yamaoka returned to his roots with further contributions to the Silent Hill franchise, including Silent Hill: The Short Message and Silent Hill 2.
