András Schiff

Hungarian-born Andras Schiff is an internationally acclaimed pianist known for his sensitive approach to playing the classic concertos of composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Schubert. He has made a vast number of recordings of their works and others and he has long been associated with the Salzburg Festival where he has collaborated often with violinist Sándor Végh. A British citizen since 2001, he was born in Hungary where he played the piano from the age of five and later studied at Budapest's Franz Liszt Academy of Music. He did well in classical music competitions and in 1979 he left his homeland and took Austrian citizenship, which he gave up in protest of that country's rightwing politics. He has performed regularly with London's Philharmonia Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony. Among his scores of albums, eight have been nominated for Grammy Awards with one winner, 'Bach: English Studies', which won for Best Solo Classical Performance in 1989. His albums 'András Schiff Piano: Live' and 'Encores After Beethoven' came out in 2016 and 'Bach, Busoni, Beethoven' in 2017.
