Betty Everett

Betty Everett was an American soul singer most famous for her million-selling hit single 'Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)' and the duet she performed with Jerry Butler, 'Let It Be Me'. Everett was born in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1939. She began singing gospel music and playing piano at the age of nine and at 18 moved to Chicago to pursue a career making secular music. She recorded for several small Chicago labels before signing with Vee-Jay Records in 1963. After a couple of lukewarm releases she found herself with a smash hit in 'Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)'. The song reached number three in the Billboard Hot 100 and sat at the top of the Cashbox R&B chart for three weeks. She found success again with, 'Let It Be Me', a duet sung with Jerry Butler. Everett topped the Cashbox R&B Chart again in 1969 with 'There'll Come a Time', also hitting number two on the Billboard R&B chart and 26 on the Hot 100. It proved her last major hit, though she did go on to continue recording up until 1980. Everett's final public performance was a 2000 PBS special. She died at home in August 2001.
