Daniel

Brazilian sertanejo singer José Daniel Camillo, professionally known as Daniel, was born on September 9, 1968, in Brotas, São Paulo. He grew up in a musical family and started performing at the age of 8 under the pseudonym Teodoro. In 1982, at the age of 14, he formed a duo with his friend João Paulo, and they started performing at local bars and events. The duo gained popularity and signed a recording contract with the Chantecler label in 1985. Their debut album, Amor Sempre Amor, was released the same year, featuring the hit singles "Brincar de Esconder," "Caminhoneiro do Amor," and "Ninguém Prende Ninguém." The duo's unique blend of sertanejo music with pop and rock elements made them one of the most successful Brazilian acts of the 1990s. In 1997, tragedy struck when João Paulo died in a car accident. Devastated by the loss of his friend and musical partner, Daniel even considered the idea of quitting music altogether. However, he eventually decided to continue his career as a solo artist, releasing his first solo album, Daniel, in 1998. Thanks to the popularity of singles such as "Adoro Amar Você" and "Declaração de Amor," his eponymous studio debut eventually achieved diamond sales in Brazil and was nominated for Best Sertanejo Album at the Latin Grammys. Over the next few years, albums like Meu Reino Encantado (2000), Um Homem Apaixonado (2001), and Amor Absoluto (2006) finished cementing his status as one of the top sertanejo artists in Brazil. In 2009, he starred alongside Vanessa Giácomo in the drama O Menino da Porteira, winning his first Latin Grammy for the film's original soundtrack. He would repeat the feat once again in 2017 with his self-titled fourteenth studio effort Daniel (2016), this time in the category of Best Sertanejo Album. Far from slowing down, the sertanejo legend continued releasing music on a regular basis, including the albums Show Homenagem a Nossa Senhora Aparecida (2019), Daniel em Casa (2021), and Duas Vozes (2022). In 2023, Daniel celebrated the legacy of his former group through the album 40 Anos: Celebra João Paulo & Daniel, which included a live rendition of their ubiquitous hit single "Estou Apaixonado" featuring César Menotti & Fabiano, Cezar & Paulinho, and Chitãozinho & Xororó.
