Danny Gokey

Singer and musician Danny Gokey was born April 24, 1980 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His interest in music began when he would sing in church with his family. He eventually became the church’s worship and music director. Rather than pursue a musical career in the Christian market, he decided to pursue a mainstream music career. Encouraged by his wife, he decided to audition for American Idol. Four weeks before that audition, his wife Sophia died during surgery to treat her congenital heart disease. Inspired by her memory, Danny Gokey auditioned and was accepted as a contestant for the program’s eighth season. While he came in third place he signed as a country artist. His 2010 debut album, My Best Days, hit number 3 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and number 4 on the Billboard 200. The album featured two singles that reached the country Top 40. By the time of his second album, Hope in Front of Me (2014), Gokey had turned his attention to the Christian/Gospel market, scoring a Number 1 on the Christian Albums chart. His 2015 album was the holiday release Christmas Is Here, which hit Number 1 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart. In the summer of 2016, Gokey released the Spanish-language album La Esperanza Frente a Mi, and climbed to 27 on the US Latin chart. He returned to the Christian market with the album Rise in 2017, again reaching the Number 1 position on the chart. His 2019 album Haven’t Seen It Yet was another hit, containing the popular single “New Day”. At the end of that year, he issued his second holiday album The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Collection. 2021’s Jesus People became his third LP to top the Christian Album chart.
