DJ Quik

DJ Quik was born David Marvin Blake in Compton, California on January 18, 1970. He discovered music early and started working as a DJ and releasing mix tapes while still a teenager. His debut album, Quik Is the Name, charted in the top 30, and the singles “Tonite” and “Born and Raised in Compton” were R&B hits. His follow-up, Way 2 Fonky, was a top 10 album that cemented his reputation as one of the architects of the gangsta sound. The making of 1995’s Safe + Sound, led him to a relationship with Suge Knight that resulted in Quik doing production work for Death Row Records. Quik produced “Let’s Get Down” for Tony! Toni! Toné! and it climbed to number 5 on the pop chart in 1997. Quik formed an independent record label in 2005 and released Trauma. He teamed with longtime pal AMG to form The Fixxers. 2011’s The Book of David was a top 5 rap album. His status as one the most admired producers of his generation is reflected in the impressive list of artists he’s worked with including, but not limited to, Whitney Huston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, and Kurupt.
