Biography

Specializing in rancheras, boleros, and corridos, El Chapo de Sinaloa is a regional Mexican artist with a deep catalog of albums, including the Grammy Award-winning Te Va a Gustar (2007). Born Ernesto Pérez in Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico, he began his major-label recording career in the mid-'90s on EMI Latin, releasing albums including El Chichi (1995) and 13 Toneladas (1996). Later in the decade he switched to Sony Discos for a series of albums including Padre de Todos (1999), Me Dicen el Rey (2000), Que Tal Si Te Compro (2001), Hechizo de Amor: Cien por Ciento Norteno (2002), El #1 de Jaripeno (2002), and Fantasia Loca (2003). During the mid-2000s, he switched labels again, moving this time to Disa for a series of albums including La Noche Perfecta (2006), El Jaripeo (2006), 15 Autenticos Exitos (2007), Te Va a Gustar (2007), and La Historia (2008). Among these Disa releases, Te Va a Gustar was particularly successful. Not only did it win a Grammy Award for Best Banda Album in 2007; it also topped the Billboard Regional Mexican album chart. Some of El Chapo de Sinaloa's biggest hits include "Recostada en la Cama," "Detras de la Puerta," "Para Que Regreses," "La Noche Perfecta," and "A Ti Si Puedo Decirte." 2008's Para Siempre went to number two on the Mexican Regional Albums and three on the Hot Latin Albums charts, and netted four Lo Nuestro Awards. That hot run of recordings continued. Over the next three years he placed no less than four albums -- including a hits compilation on both charts simultaneously. The singer started focusing more on singles after 2010 and had a successful chart run with"Embrujado" and "Regal del Cielo" in 2011, "Fuerte" and "Mi Todo" in 2012, and the video hit "Te Amo" in 2013. 2014 saw his focus return to albums with Hace Falta un Beso, his final studio album for Universal. El Chapo de Sinaloa kicked off his new relationship with Sony's Luz label by issuing the duet set Frente a Frente with Roberto Tapia, followed by his own Camina Sin Mirar Atrás later that year. After incessant touring for more than a year, the singer returned to recording and released Sol y Luna in 2017. ~ Jason Birchmeier
