Girls' Generation

Known in their native country as The Nation's Singers, K-pop sensation Girls' Generation formed in 2007 under the guidance of SM Entertainment, one of the most powerful and influential star makers in the Korean music business. Girls' Generation are known for their influential role in advertising as well as their contribution to music; members Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, Seohyun, and Jessica have been highly influential among teenage audiences throughout Asia and the group has landed a steady stream of product endorsement opportunities from advertising agencies. In 2011 and 2012, the group featured in more commercials than any other South Korean celebrities. The band is credited with shifting the emphasis within Korean music onto female idols rather than the male groups, which dominated the Korean charts during the early part of the 21st century. Girls' Generation made their official debut on August 5, 2007, with the release of the single "Into the New World" from their eponymous Korean album. However, their breakthrough came with "Gee" in 2009, a song that dominated Melon's charts and marked a record on KBS's Music Bank. Following singles "Genie," "Oh!," and "Run Devil Run" solidified their status as icons in Asia. Their second album, Oh! (2010), made history by winning the Golden Disc award for Album of the Year. Their Japanese debut in 2011 broke records, and their subsequent releases, including The Boys (2010), I Got a Boy (2013), and Lion Heart (2015) all topped the Circle Albums Chart in South Korea. In 2014, Jessica abandoned the group due to growing conflicts between her and the group's schedule. Released in 2017 to celebrate their tenth anniversary in the music industry, their sixth album Holiday Night peaked at number 2 in Korea and reached number 1 on the Billboard World Albums chart. After exploring individual careers, Girls' Generation made a triumphant return with the LP Forever 1 in 2022, continuing their legacy as K-pop legends.
