Hiatus Kaiyote

Formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 2011, Hiatus Kaiyote is an ARIA- and Grammy-nominated band whose diverse brand of R&B is influenced by soul, jazz, and hip-hop. Vocalist/guitarist Nai Palm, bassist Paul Bender, drummer Perrin Moss, and keyboardist Simon Mavin released their band's independent debut, Tawk Tomahawk, in 2012. Championed by R&B icons like Prince and ?uestlove, Hiatus Kaiyote signed with a Sony Music imprint and reissued Tawk Tomahawk with the label's help. The reissued album included a revamped version of the song "Nakamarra," which featured a cameo from Q-Tip and later received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best R&B Performance." The neo-soul sophomore album Choose Your Weapon was released in 2015, having been recorded in Australia and the United States over a two-year period. Choose Your Weapon peaked at Number 22 in Australia and Number 11 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, with the song "Breathing Underwater" earning the group its second Grammy nomination for "Best R&B Performance." One year after the album's release, Anderson .Paak sampled a pair of Hiatus Kaiyote songs on his own Grammy-nominated album, Malibu. The following year, Kendrick Lamar sampled the band's "Atari" for his own song "Duckworth," which went gold in America. Hiatus Kaiyote's members took a break to work on individual projects before reconvening for 2021's Mood Valiant, which charted at Number 4 in Australia and Number 54 in the UK.
