Biography

Charting Latin pop/rock singer/songwriter Kany García emerged in 2007 as her native Puerto Rico's fastest rising star. Her often dramatic confessional songs, which take as their subjects lust, sexual identity, domestic violence, and commitment, offer narratives and perspectives on life's biggest moments. While each of her albums and singles have placed on pop and radio charts, 2016's swaggering Limonada entered the Latin Pop Albums chart at number one. The daughter of former Spanish priest Antonio and puertorriqueña Encarnita García de Jesús, Kany grew up in a home filled with music in the town of Toa Baja. The youngest of three musically inclined siblings, Kany began studying classical music as a child. Already well-versed in cello, music theory, and voice, Kany began attending the renowned Escuela Libre de Música at age 13. In her mid-teens she abandoned the idea of a career in classical music in favor of pursuing her passion for songwriting. When the time came, García continued her studies at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. In her early twenties, a brush with fame became a brush with death for the budding artist. Following a successful audition for the television program Objectivo Fama, she fell asleep behind the wheel, barely surviving a near-fatal car accident. The hospital stay cost her the opportunity to appear on the show. This setback did not keep García from the craft that she loved. Continuing to write and perform led to talks with Sony BMG some years later. While being courted by the music industry superpower, Sony invited her to share the stage with Franco De Vita at an engagement in Puerto Rico. Her performance was met so warmly, it garnered the evening's only standing ovation, and an offer of a recording contract followed shortly thereafter. Her debut album, Cualquier Día, was released in July of 2007 and reached number ten on Billboard's Latin Pop Albums chart. In 2008 she won a pair of Latin Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Her follow-up, 2009's Boleto de Entrada, entered the Top Latin Albums chart at number six. Its single, "Feliz," landed inside the Top Five of the Latin Pop Songs chart. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy. García toured extensively for the next year and lent her voice to recordngs by Tego Calderon (El Que Sabe, Sabe) and Gilberto Santa Rosa (Irrepetible). Her third self-titled album was issued in July of 2012. It debuted at number one on various charts in Puerto Rico and the United States. It netted four charting singles and a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. She followed it with the concert recording En Vivo in 2014. When not touring she wrote and recorded with producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Lana Del Rey). The pre-release single "Perfecto Para Mi" arrived in the fall of the following year, scoring well inside the Top 40 of the Latin Pop Songs chart and showing high visibility on streaming charts. García's fourth studio album, Limonada, was issued in May of 2016, three months after she came out as a lesbian. After opening its run in the top spot (the press attention after her coming out no doubt assisted in the album's popularity), it transcended the media storm and remained in the top slot for another two weeks and stayed on the list for the remainder of the year. After tours of the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico, Garcia took a short break before re-entering the studio with producer/guitarist Afo Verde -- Sony's Chairman/CEO of Latin America, Spain and Portugal -- and her musical director Marcos Sanchez. The resulting album, 2018's Soy Yo, featured two guest appearances: Melendi joined her for a duet, "A Mis Amigos," and longtime friend Residente (Calle 13) appeared on the closing track "Banana Papaya." The album peaked at number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. Her sixth album, Contra el Viento, arrived in May 2019 and hit number 22 on the Top Latin Albums chart and number three on the Latin Pop Albums chart. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
