Kito

Born Maaike Kito Lebbing (June 20, 1987) in the small town of Denmark, Western Australia, the Australian artist known as Kito has traveled the globe and carved a path for herself as a successful DJ, producer and songwriter. After moving to Perth aged 17 for a short-lived stint at fashion school, she signed up to study music at a TAFE (technical and further education) institution and simultaneously began honing her skills as a DJ at local clubs around the city, as well as working in a record store. Two years, a trip to Europe unlocked a love of dubstep that inspired her to try her hand at producing – with impressive results. In 2008, Kito got her big break when she debuted her first releases on Disfigured Dubz; the label owned by UK dubstep pioneer Skream. 2010's Kito EP followed, with the bass-loving producer establishing a floor-shaking dubstep-led sound that she continued on 2012's Electric Empire EP for Ed Banger Records, a collaboration with French producer Feadz that also drew from the electro-house aesthetic of the time while adding synth-pop touches. Kito dropped her third EP, Haani, in 2018 – which featured Hudson Mohawke and other contributors – and went on to notch up a string of remixes and other productions, both as a solo artist and a guest producer, working for musicians including Mabel, and on Jorja Smith's celebrated 2018 debut album Lost & Found. After relocating to Los Angeles and continuing to build up an impressive CV, Kito was nominated for the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year (Los Angeles) at the 2020 Global APRA Music Awards. The "Recap" single landed in 2021.
