LCD Soundsystem

Taking throbbing bass lines, electro beats and a DIY punk approach, DFA Records boss James Murphy created a dirty disco sound that produced a soundtrack for the 2000s hipster New York and influenced a new wave of producers intent on making rock music danceable. LCD Soundsystem was born when Murphy struck up a friendship with Les Savy Fav's drummer Pat Mahoney while producing them and the pair built a studio together before creating the demo 'Losing My Cool'. Parodying an obsession with coolness, the track became a huge underground hit and, inundated with requests to play live, Murphy put together a band from friends signed to his label. Their debut album 'LCD Soundsystem' came in 2005 cementing his reputation as one of music's most diverse and innovative thinkers and singles 'Daft Punk Are Playing at My House' and 'Disco Infiltrator' became dance floor anthems of the most discerning indie club nights. The band's follow-up 'Sound of Silver' in 2007 garnered even more praise, winning the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album and being named Album of the Year by 'The Guardian', while the single 'North American Scum' captured Murphy's post-modern angst and trademark fidgety funk groove. The band recorded a track for the soundtrack to the film '21' - led by infectious single 'Drunk Girls' - before returning with what was reported to be their final album, 'This Is Happening' in 2010. They played a four-hour gig at Madison Square Garden in New York and, as they were joined on stage by Arcade Fire, announced that it would be their last. After several rumours of a reunion were quashed by DFA, LCD Soundsystem released an unexpected Christmas single, 'Christmas Will Break Your Heart', in 2015. A reunion was officially confirmed in early 2016 with headline spots revealed for Coachella Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo, throughout the year. After spending the year touring and working on new material, the band released their fourth studio album 'American Dream' in autumn 2017 followed by live album 'Electric Lady Sessions' in 2019.
