Leon James

Film composer and singer Leon James was born December 1, 1991 in Chennai, India. He was exposed to music at an early age as his father managed the popular singer and film composer A.R. Rahman, and Leon James began taking music lessons before the age of 5. He went to school with, and became fast friends with, award-winning music composer Anirudh Ravichander. Leon James got his break in the Tamil film world when the director of Kanchana 2 stumbled on a melody he had posted online. The director hired him to compose songs for the film, and that led to his breakthrough with his work for 2015’s Ko 2, a Tamil-language political thriller for which Leon James wrote the bulk of the film’s songs and recorded the vocals for a pair of them. His work has been described as possessing a new-age influence, and not content to just work in film, he became a founding member of Project Yuj, a funk-inspired combo. He continued to work steadily in film, scoring a Malaysian chart hit with “Nee Tholaindhaayo” from the soundtrack of 2016’s Kavalai Vendam five years after its release. In addition to all of this output, he released a number of songs unaffiliated with any movies, including multiple collaborations with Bollywood actress Andrea Jeremiah.
