Nicky Jam

Born to a Dominican mother and a Puerto Rican father in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the reggaeton artist Nick Rivera Caminero (March 17, 1981), aka Nicky Jam, had one of the greatest comeback stories in the history of Latin urban music. After spending part of his childhood in the United States, he moved back to Puerto Rico with his family at the age of 10. He released his first EP … Distinto a los Demás at the age of 14 and although it was unsuccessful it did bring his name to the attention of some influential producers such as DJ Playero and DJ Joe, both key players who have been pivotal in disseminating reggaeton to a wider audience. During the early part of his career, Nicky Jam formed a strong association with Daddy Yankee, one of the top reggaeton exponents and they often performed under the name Los Cangris. However, the duo’s promising start was cut short by Nicky Jam’s drug addiction, resulting in their dissolution in 2004. That year, he also issued the album Vida Escante, the follow-up to his 2001 studio debut Haciendo Escante, which reached Number 23 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. During this period, Nicky Jam struggled with depression and had his fair share of run-ins with the law as his substance abuse problems spiraled out of control. In the following years, the singer moved to Medellín, cleaned up his act, buried the hatchet with Daddy Yankee, and scored his first Top 10 song with “Travesuras” in 2014. A year later, a reinvigorated and sober Nicky Jam won his first Latin Grammy for his single “El Perdón.” In 2017, he returned with a fourth full-length, the aptly-titled Fénix, which would become his first Number 1 record in the US. Fénix went platinum eleven times and set the stage for his next album Íntimo (2019), which featured cameos by Anuel AA, Ozuna, and J Balvin. His sixth studio effort Infinity saw the light in 2021 and was followed by the single “Magnum” with Jhay Cortez.
