Biography

Established in 1977 in Oslo, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra has become one of Europe's leading ensembles because of its talented musicians, original programming, and international reputation. Originally conceived in 1975 by violinist Bjarne Fiskum as a summer orchestra for string students, the orchestra has been led since its formation by Terje Tønnesen, who was joined as co-artistic director by Iona Brown from 1981 to 2001, with Leif Ove Andsnes serving as principal guest conductor since 2002; Brown was succeeded by Isabelle van Keulen in 2009. Drawn from members of the Oslo Philharmonic and freelance musicians, the orchestra's membership changes from project to project, though a core group of professionals maintains its continuity. The orchestra performs its regular concert series at the University of Oslo, though it also gives concerts at other Norwegian concert houses, and has performed internationally, with major tours in Europe, Asia, and North America. The orchestra has recorded extensively on Lawo Classics, Naxos, Simax, EMI Classics, and Chandos, among other labels.
