The Prestige All Stars

Founded in New York City in 1949 by Bob Weinstock, Prestige Records is one of the most influential jazz labels in history. The label’s catalog focused on a series of jazz subgenres including cool jazz, bop and mainstream jazz. The label’s roster over the years included many of the genre’s legendary performers including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Stan Gets, Gene Ammons and many others. Many of Prestige’s contracted artists often worked collaborated on each other’s albums in the studio. Some of the albums were issued under a single artist’s name while others were released under several artists’ names. There was a series of recordings in the late 1950s without any clear leader and these were issued under the group name the Prestige All Stars. In 1957, three albums were issued under the group name, all of them featuring different group line-ups: All Day Long, Earthy, and All Night Long. The albums featured high profile artists such as Donald Byrd (trumpet), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Art Taylor (drums), Tommy Flanagan (piano), Mal Waldron (piano), Art Farmer (trumpet), Ed Thigpen (drums), Hank Mobley (saxophone), and many others. Further albums released under the Prestige All Stars name include Roots (1958) and Wheelin’ & Dealin’ (1959). The group name has been revived on several releases throughout the years, but nothing has matched the impact – and legend – of the original releases in the 1950s.
