Rhett Miller

The country artist Rhett Miller comes from a successful Texan family. Despite his secure upbringing he had a troubled teenage life and at the age of 14, unable to cope with the bullying he was subjected to at school, attempted to take his own life. The incident indirectly helped the boy turn his life around because he immersed himself in his music as a way of coping with bouts of depression. He played his first gig when he was 15 at the 500 Cafe in Dallas and began establishing a name for himself performing at venues around Texas. He went on to find work on the national circuit opening for acts such as Chris Isaak, Rosanne Cash and punk band The Lords of the New Church. After various experiments with forming his own band Miller eventually founded the Old 97's, an acoustic three piece, and released their first album 'Hitchhike to Rhome' in 1993. After releasing a follow-up album the band set up a showcase gig and found themselves the subject of a bidding war between 15 major labels before eventually signing to Elektra. In tandem with his career with the Old 97's Miller enjoys a successful solo career having released seven solo albums to date. He is also a prolific writer of short stories, essays and poems.
