Sara Evans

With a string of Number 1 hits – including “No Place That Far”, “Born To Fly”, “Suds In The Bucket”, “A Real Fine Place To Start” and “A Little Bit Stronger” – Sara Evans is one of the darlings of Nashville's nu country scene. A mixture of English, Welsh and Native American blood, Evans – the eldest girl of seven children – was born on February 5th, 1971 and raised on a farm in Franklin, Missouri, and was on stage at a young age singing with her family's country music group. Confined to a wheelchair while recovering from injuries suffered after being hit by a car, she concentrated on singing and began performing in night clubs in Columbia, Missouri. In 1991 she moved to Nashville to pursue her dream of becoming a country music star and, after Harlan Howard heard her demo of his song "Tiger By The Tail", he helped get her signed to RCA. She released her debut album Three Chords & The Truth in 1997 but it was her single “No Place That Far” – title track of her second album – that was to be her breakthrough. By her third album, Born To Fly, in 2000, she'd expanded her approach and gained a broader appeal and the run of hits began, resulting in a series of awards. She gained further celebrity status in the US following an appearance on Dancing With The Stars and in 2014 was back in the charts with a brand new album: Slow Me Down. Closing out the year with a Christmas album, At Christmas, she later broke ties with RCA in 2015, opting to release her future endeavours via her own newly established, Sony-distributed imprint, Born to Fly. Her ninth LP, Words, arrived in 2017 and reached #46 on the Billboard 200, with a follow-up, Copy That, emerging in 2020 to mixed reviews. Alongside her solo career, she now records as the Barker Family Band alongside her children, Avery and Olivia, with whom she released an eponymous debut EP in 2019.
