Superorganism

Known for their left-leaning melting pot of genres, the avant-pop collective Superorganism was formed in London, England, in 2017. The group's beginnings date back to 2015 when Mark Turner, Christopher Young, Tim Shann, and Blair Everson of the New Zealand indie rock band The Eversons met vocalist and visual artist Orono Noguchi during one of their gigs in Japan. After bonding over their shared love of Internet memes, the band invited her to sing on one of the demos they had been working on. The result of those sessions was much more expansive than anything The Eversons had done before, incorporating elements from hip-hop and electro-pop into their indie rock stylings. This drastic change prompted the creation of a new project called Superorganism, which made its debut in 2017 with the single "Something for Your M.I.N.D." Follow-up singles "It's All Good," "Nobody Cares," and "Everybody Wants to Be Famous" continued to build the buzz around the band in anticipation of their first full-length. Released in 2018, their eponymous studio debut received favorable reviews and peaked at Number 25 in the UK and Number 4 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. The album was promoted through a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland with Japanese band CHAI as their opening act. In the following years, Superorganism was reduced to a five-piece after the departure of Ruby, Blair Everson, and Mark Turner, who was publicly accused of sexual misconduct. They re-emerged in 2022 with World Wide Pop, a much more streamlined effort that entered the UK Official Albums Chart at Number 99 and featured cameos by Stephen Malkmus, Gen Hoshino, Dylan Cartlidge, and CHAI.
