Veronika Fischer

Veronika Fischer is a German singer who forged her career in the 1970s in the former East Germany where she trained as a classical singer at Carl Maria Von Weber College of Music in Dresden in the late 1960s. During this time she also performed with a number of jazz combos. Her first band, Panta Rhei, released their first album in 1973 on the state-run Amiga record label. Two years later, still on Amiga, Fischer formed her own unit, Veronika Fischer & Band, and released four more albums to achieve group sales of some 1.5 million units in the Communist state. Her style moved from jazz and jazz rock influences to schlager style of sentimental pop and in 1981 she moved from East to West Berlin where she was signed by WEA records and began releasing music in the West. However, she also continued to appear on television in East Germany. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, she has continued to tour in her former home state. Her artistic output in the reformed and unified Germany has seen her working closely with the author and lyricist Gisela Steineckert both on songs and on her biography. She also switched labels to Polydor to continue releasing albums and singles with a hiatus from 2011 where greatest hits and live albums took over from new material. However, a new album 'Where from Where' hit the shops and streaming platforms in 2018, with a tour following.
