Chris Minh Doky – born in Copenhagen, Denmark on February 7, 1969 – is a Vietnamese-Danish bassist, composer, and bandleader. While he’s best-known as a jazz musician, he has also performed with rock artists, symphony orchestras, ballet companies and opera singers. He began playing in Denmark but while in his teens, he moved to New York to pursue music as a career. He was discovered by jazz guitarist Mike Stern, who hired him for his own band. He soon began working as a sideman for other jazz greats including Michael Brecker, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sanborn, and Trilok Gurtu. Doky’s first album as a bandleader was 1989’s Appreciation. He’s followed that with over a dozen albums including Letters (1991), Paris by Night (1993), Listen Up! (2000), Scenes from a Dream (2010), and Transparency (2018). Doky’s musical scope is broad and he incorporates other genres into his work. In order to express himself in these other genres, he also performs with side projects including the New Nordic Jazz Project and The Electric Nomads.
