Do As Infinity

J-pop group Do As Infinity formed in Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan in 1999. Founded by guitarist and songwriter Dai Nagao, vocalist Tomiko Van, and guitarist Ryo Owatari, the trio released their debut single, “Tangerine Dream,” in 1999. They promoted their music by performing everywhere they could and as often as they could. Their second single, “Heart,” was released at the end of the year and the band continued playing live on streetcorners, in CD shops, and elsewhere. They finally achieved success with the release of their third single, “Oasis,” which reached the Top 30 and was eventually used in advert for a cosmetic company. Their debut album, Break of Dawn (2000), reached Number 3 on the Japanese albums chart. Band leader Dai Nagao stepped away from live performances and focused on writing songs for Do As Infinity. Their next album, 2001’s New World, reached Number 1 and was followed later that year by Deep Forest, which also peaked at Number 1. Capitalizing on their success, they released the compilation, Do the Best (2002), which was their third release in a row to reach the top of the charts. However, after several Top 5 studio albums – True Song (2002), Gates of Heaven (2003), and Need Your Love (2005) – and the Do the B-side (2004) and Do the A-Side (2005) compilations, Do As Infinity broke up. However, after each member pursued solo careers, Tomiko Van and Ryo Owatari reformed the group without the participation of Dai Nagao and picked up where they left off with the album Eternal Flame (2009), which reached Number 9. Their 2011 release, Eight, rose to Number 4 on the chart, but the album Time Machine only managed to hit Number 14. While their album Do As Infinity X (2012) reached Number 15, their next three albums – Brand New Days (2015), Alive (2018), and Do As Infinity (2019) – didn’t even make the Top 20. During their career, Do As Infinity has also issued five live albums and over 30 singles, 15 of which made the Top 10. They’ve also released 10 compilations including Lounge (2019), Tears Selection (2020), and Do the Complete (2021).
