Floating Points

Born in 1986, Mancunian neuroscientist and experimental electronic musician Sam Shepherd, under the moniker Floating Points, received gushing praise in the specialist music press with his 2015 debut album Elaenia. Originally conceived as a single track, Shepherd eventually adopted a more conventional format and cut the recording into seven sections. An undoubtedly prodigious talent and his creations were every bit as groundbreaking as early Mike Oldfield or Tangerine Dream. He had previously played with the Floating Points Ensemble, a fluid group of talented musicians who won an award for the Best BBC Maida Vale Session for one of their studio sessions performed there. In 2016 Shepherd took his band to the Mojave Desert on an ambitious project to record and rehearse prior to their US tour during which the group recorded a short film titled Reflections. The short won widespread acclaim amongst music critics and firmly established Shepherd as one of the leading players in the field of experimental electronic music. In 2019 he released his sophomore LP, Crush. For the 2021 album Promises, Floating Points collaborated with jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra.
